Linking vs Overlock: The Seam Buyers Feel.

Run your hand across a premium sweater's shoulder and you feel a flat, continuous join. That's linking — the loops from both panels are interlooped together, not trimmed and wrapped. The choice sits in the tech pack and drives both hand and price.

The decision is in the tech pack. Premium shoulders and necklines on fine-gauge or fully-fashioned garments get linking; mid-market construction uses overlock. We recommend per style — and price accordingly.

A sweater can look great at sample stage and still drift on fit, zippers, rib recovery, or wash stability once you repeat production. Keeping colour, measurements, knit density, and finishing consistent across bulk is the hardest part of buying knitwear.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Knitwear Manufacturers

Which gauge do I actually need? Half the factories I ask just quote "fine, mid, or chunky".

Gauge (GG) is needles per inch, and it decides drape and weight: 3GG knits 600–1,000 GSM chunky, 14GG knits 150–250 GSM fine. Merino crewnecks live at 7–12GG, chunky cardigans at 3–5GG, twin sets and knit polos at 12GG. The recommendation comes with numbers — then gets verified in the pre-knit simulation before yarn is committed.

Can you knit a jacquard logo at low volume, or is that a 500-piece program?

It depends on the pattern. Jacquard logos on accessories — beanies, scarves — start around 50 pieces. A full-garment jacquard cardigan with a large multi-colour repeat carries a higher minimum, because machine programming and dye lots cost the same at 100 pieces as at 1,000. The real number per style comes with the setup cost explained, instead of a flat "500 minimum" or a vague "any quantity".

My last merino sweater pilled after two washes. Is that avoidable?

Mostly, yes — pilling starts with yarn quality. Merino is sourced at 17.5–19.5 micron with RWS and OEKO-TEX documentation, and every knit gets graded for pilling before bulk. If the design calls for a lower-grade yarn, that trade-off is flagged up front — not after the chargebacks.

Two batches of the same style came in slightly different shades. How is dye-lot handled?

Shading comes from dye lots splitting across production. The dye lot is allocated for the full run before knitting starts, and colour is matched by spectrophotometer to 99.8% accuracy against the standard — PMS, Pantone TCX, or the buyer's own reference.

Why simulate the knit before a physical sample? Isn't that just extra time?

The simulation is where gauge errors and machine-jam risks surface — before yarn is spun, not after 500 pieces. Stitch density, fabric weight, and fashioning are computed on Shima Seiki SDS-ONE APEX / Stoll M1plus, so the physical sample comes back right the first time. It usually saves a round of sampling, not adds one.
